So, what is new with Nerdcore music these days?

Nerd Music Shows

As a mostly native Austinite (or at least I claim to be), I was thrilled to hear about two shows launching 2013:

1. Nerdcore Hip Hop Saves Austin!

• MadHatter, head of Scrub Club Records, a not-for-profit, independent music label, recently moved from Kansas all the way to Austin, TX, the music Capitol of the world! King Pheenix, an artist joining Scrub Club in 2009 (who also was announced as moving to Austin, TX), joined up with hatter for what would be the first of many shows in the Austin area.

• The show was yesterday, 1/28, at Game Over Video Games. It was a humble, but hyped up performance, enjoyed by all!

2. MAGFest Presents: Game Over Austin!!!

• MAGFest, a music and gaming festival centered in Washington, D.C., has gone mobile, planting nerd music shows at a couple of locations around the country, including Austin, TX! Who will be in attendance?

• The show is going to be held at 7pm at Red 7, a downtown Austin venue. Tickets are $10 in advance, and $12 at the door, so think ahead!

Nerdcore Now, VPC returns!

That’s right, it’s back: Vocalist / Producer Challenge 2.

This year, the VPC gets started with a bang. Over 50 entries, ranging from veterans like YTCracker, Bill Beats, Adam Warrock, Beaker and Beefy, to plenty of newcomers and rising stars. Round 1 is in, so go sign up to vote!

Seriously….wonderfully arranged, and well orchestrated, it is an amazing contest, with a prize of $500 for the winning pair!

If you are not in Orlando right now, you are missing out on awesome musics! It’s the last day of Nerdapalooza, and there have been so many talented artists and bands!!!! I love seeing how amazing artists are with the fans, as well. It always amazes me how awesome it is to see so many nerds in one place. As so many people have already voiced, “Nerdapalooza is like coming home.” I’ve seen so many friends, and made so many new ones! I couldn’t imagine missing Nerdapalooza!

In the wrap up I’ll post after this weekend, I’ll make sure to do a detailed explanation of my favorite moments and things I didn’t like…

On another note, I have seen so many cute, sexy, and…interesting outfits this year. I’m snapping pictures, so if you see that crazy drunk lo tech girl with the busted iPad, let me take your picture!!!! (I mean…I’ll do it anyway…)

Geek Fashion Trends!

Let’s face it. Geek fashion trends have been popping up everywhere in this world. The big thick glasses that were a staple of the nerds of old have been rising in popularity; trend stores like Hot Topic and Spencers have whored out the retro geek industry with t-shirts and other apparel donning everything from Mario, to Donkey Kong, to Pokemon (o150), to Zelda, to arcade games, to Ninja Turtles and Power Rangers and SO many more. The notable ”I <3 Nerd”  and “Talk Nerdy to Me” shirts added to the rise of this Geek Chic trend as far back as the early 2000s.

Hell, remember when all geeks were homely, awkward, fashion disasters? The BIGGEST thing that has arrived on the scene in my opinion has been the transformation of geek girls. Google “Geek Girl” and you’ll see a couple real (and by that I mean stereotypical) geeks, but about 1,000,000 hot girls with geeky logo shirts. Now, I know that you can be attractive and geeky, but IMO, a good portion of these geek goddesses lack actual experience. Level up, bitches. We will continue to ogle you, but don’t touch our gaming systems, don’t ask what a Stargate is, and paws off the dice.

Now, I’d say there is a difference between Geek and Geek Chic. Geek Chic basically refers to someone that takes a nerdy look, and refurbishes it to look ‘fashionable’…. now what is means to be a geek and what it means to be fashionable is VERY open to interpretation. I don’t care. I’m referring to all popularized geek clothing as Chic. Because when you wear the geek, baby you’re rockin’ the Chic.

Now, I have been to many conventions centered on nerdy themes, and I LOVE all of the unique and interesting Geek Attire I get to see and wear. Which is why I am looking forward to this year’s Nerdapalooza in Orlando!

Friday, 8/3

• ASAP: Arrive in Orlando and high-tail it to your established accommodations, hopefully at the Crowne Plaza Orlando Downtown, where most event-goers and artists will be.
• 6pm-12am+: Get your asses to the Nerdapalooza Pre-Party at The Social.

Saturday, 8/4

• 12pm-10pm(ish): Enjoy Day 1 of Nerdapalooza at The Beacham and The Social, alternating sets.
• 10:30pm-12am: Hit The Social for the exciting EPIC WIN Burlesque show (separate ticket cost without VIP Pass: $10), featuring these fine people:

• 12am-close: GET YOUR DANCE ON with an after-party dance party at The Social, DJ’d by SPICE-J!

Sunday, 8/5

• 12pm-10pm: Nerdapalooza Day 2 at The Social and The Beacham, wrapping up the weekend of the actual Nerdapalooza event. THAT’S NOT ALL!!!!!!!
• 12am-???: At Orlando’s The Geek Easy, DJ RoboRob will be keepin’ that dirrty nerrdy energy going with an 8-Bit Rave party! Will there be alcohol provided?! I’ll have to find out!

Monday, 8/6

• 1:30pm-2:15am: The nerd music continues with “The Day After…” Part 2 – Electric Boogaloo, at The Haven Lounge in Winterpark (not far at ALL!), and includes headliner legends: MC Lars, YTCracker, Random, and the jam-packed DJ RoboRob! The event includes 24 artists and is bound to put the geeked out cherry on top of your nerdy music sunday! EAT IT UP, NERDS! Seperate ticket cost: $15 online, $20 at the door.

So I am super excited about Nerdapalooza, OF COURSE!

My Nerdapalooza Experience?

The first time I heard about Nerdapalooza was in 2009.
I had joined a Nerdcore Hip Hop channel on the popular video chat site Stickam.com, and from there, I was introduced to music that matched my nerdy interests! So it was only natural for me to find my way to Nerdapalooza in Orlando, Florida!

That year, I made a website called the GeekPeekPost, and collaborated with Game Music 4 All’s Genoboost to create a fundraiser to help generate money for artists to get to Nerdapalooza!

The picture to the left includes a few of the people at that event. From MC Lars to some MagiTek crew, to the amazing MC Gigahertz (we shared many a Long Island that night!), to Shammers, to myself and Genoboost, to so many other amazing people I got to meet that weekend!!!

I even went to the Emergency Pizza Party’s afterparty, where they filmed the music video for O.G. Original Gamer.

So that was all amazing, and ever since that crazy awesome Nerdapalooza 2009, I was hooked!

I came back in 2010 with another fundraiser with GM4All that helped get Dr. Awkward to Nerdapalooza. So many amazing artists and organizations donated merchandise to make that possible, and the prizes amounted to $100s in gift cards and raffle prizes! I can’t begin to express how wonderful nerds in the nerd community are!

Then I went to Nerdapalooza 2011 and had a blast, got shit show crazy, lived the Lo Life, swam, wrestled a girl to the ground and told her to say “Lo Tech is the Greatest” (<3 you!), drank some tequila, broke some stuff, got rowdy (general Lo Tech hijinks)….. Yeah, you would have had to have been there. And I loved every minute of it, especially the amazing people I got to hang out with!!!!

What about Nerdapalooza 2012?

This year the Nerdapalooza crew is offering a VIP pass for $290 and I definitely snatched one up! Also, EPIC WIN BURLESQUE SHOW!
